Nelson G. Huson, Union soldier, was born in Starkey, NY in 1842. By the outbreak of the Civil War the family had moved to Wauconda, Lake Co., Ill. In summer of 1862, Huson, a 19 year old farmer, enlisted in the Co. B of 96th Regiment of Illinois Infantry and was detailed as a drummer. He fought in Kentucky, Tennessee, and Georgia, and took part in the operations in Tennessee -- Franklin, Brentwood, Triun, Wartrace, Estill Springs, etc., Chattanooga Campaign, and Atlanta Campaign.
